During the bulk of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned in a realm of memories constructed from the memories of the villain Henry. Their quest for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's early years—a moment that could contain the key to defeating him once and for all.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

When she finds Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a spyglass taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

They watch a child version of Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma wasn't just a fight for life.

An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a warship into a realm later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to sell to the Soviets, who were keen to start their version of the tests. The man in the tunnel is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is understood of Brenner's work, the case would assuredly have samples of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, which triggered the awakening of his powers—traits he would later pass on to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the case could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that the boy was transported in the Abyss, returning hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he battles the control of a sinister presence, much like how Will Byers was influenced by the entity in the past.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he orchestrates the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a showdown between him and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to gain strength.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the series finale ahead.
