Chicago White Sox Secure Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Major $34 Million Agreement.

In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the American League club have officially added infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract for the accomplished player.

Deal Structure and Incentives

The agreement grants a seven-figure signing bonus, payable within 30 days, alongside annual pay of $16M for the 2026 season and $17 million for the following year.

Additionally, Murakami's final-year pay is subject to escalators based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for being named the Most Valuable Player award.
  • $500,000 for placing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250K for placing fourth through 10th.
  • An identical bonus for being named the Rookie of the Year honor.

The agreement includes that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his approval and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the contract. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.

Compensation and Team Legacy

As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of over $6.5 million to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's Central League. The Yakult organization would also receive a 15% cut of any triggered incentive payments.

Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese to suit up for the South Siders, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 in February, joins a promising core of hitters in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a difficult season, placing last in the American League Central but showing a notable improvement from the previous campaign.

The winner of back-to-back Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami made history with a historic 2022 season where he launched 56 HRs, breaking the longstanding record for a NPB hitter formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was shortened to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Even with fanning 64 Ks, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 driven in.

Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 career batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Initially playing primarily at first, he has more recently played to third.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's big-game performance were on center stage during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a game-ending double that brought home teammates for a thrilling 6-5 victory. The next night in the title match against the Team USA, he blasted a tying home run in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's subsequent 3-2 victory.

The new White Sox addition is slated to be formally introduced at a press conference on the coming Monday.
