Blasts and Low-Flying Jets Reported in Venezuelan Capital Caracas

Witness testimonies emerged of multiple explosions and the noise of low-altitude planes in Caracas in the small hours of Saturday. The incident has led to claims from Venezuela's authorities and requests for international intervention.

Caracas Accuses United States of Military Action

The authoritarian government has condemned the US of what it calls "foreign aggression," stating that ex- President Donald Trump reportedly authorized attacks against the South American state. In an public statement, the authorities confirmed that attacks had targeted the capital and several other regions: Miranda, La Guaira, and Aragua.

"Our primary goal of this attack is to gain control of our nation's natural resources, in particular its oil and resources," Venezuela asserted.

Caracas urged the world to censure the actions, which it termed a "clear infringement of international norms" that endangered numerous of lives in peril.

Reports of Explosions and Military Bases Hit

Locals reported experiencing roughly several explosions around the middle of the night local time. Residents in several districts allegedly rushed into the streets.

"The earth trembled. It was terrifying. We heard blasts and jets in the sky," said one witness.

Plumes of smoke was seen pouring from key military installations in the city: the La Carlota military airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna army base, where president Maduro is reported to reside.

Global Condemnation

The president of neighboring Colombia, wrote on X that "At this moment they are attacking Venezuela... attacking it with missiles." He called for an immediate emergency session of the UN Security Council.

Colombia, which recently joined the Security Council, said it would activate operational plans at its shared border with its neighbor.

Background

These alleged attacks are preceded by a prolonged military buildup by the US against the Venezuelan government. Beginning in last summer, authorities reported a major naval buildup off the country's Caribbean coast and a number of airstrikes on boats suspected of illegal activities.

The government has declared "the implementation of emergency" and ordered all national defence plans to be activated. It has also summoned its supporters to protest and "repudiate this foreign aggression."

US authorities and the US Department of Defense have not immediately addressed inquiries for comment regarding the events.
