A senior Russian general has been declared dead following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The event occurred on Monday morning when an IED placed beneath a vehicle detonated, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' operational training department.

Authorities indicated that one possible explanation points to the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has remained silent.

Location of the Incident

Teams have been sent to the location, which is understood to be in a southerly district of the metropolis.

Media coverage suggest the explosion took place in a car park near a residential building.

Series of Targeted Attacks

Since the beginning of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military commanders have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.

This latest event follows other serious incidents, including:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a device concealed on a scooter was detonated remotely.

While a Ukrainian source previously attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are rarely officially confirmed as a matter of standard practice.

The conflict has witnessed shadowy operations moving into the streets of the Russian capital.

The investigation into General Sarvarov's death continues to be active.
